New year resolutions: an old-fashioned yearly tradition or an effective way of setting goals?

Jan 5, 2022

There’s no statistical proof of how many Nigerians start each year by making New Year resolutions but making New Year resolutions is a popular tradition practiced in many parts of the world including Nigeria.

According to Wikipedia, a New Year’s resolution is a tradition, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behaviour, to accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life.

People make resolutions at the start of each year. While some people adhere to it wholeheartedly, others abandon it after a short time and go back to their old habits.

This raises the question of whether New Year’s resolutions are only an annual tradition or if people actually seek fresh starts in many areas of their lives.

We asked a few Nigerians about their thoughts on New Year’s resolutions, they said:

Layo; Brand Manager

I think making a New Year’s resolution is a great idea.

Personally, it serves as a big reference point throughout the year and keeps me in tune with whatever goal I have set for the new year. It really helps keep things balanced for me.

Aderinsola; Banker

I personally don’t believe so much in making New Year resolutions owing to the simple fact that, by the 2nd week of January of a New Year, most people forget about their resolutions.

While I’m not disputing the fact that some people make and stick by their New Year resolutions, I’m all for being a better version of my old self in the new year by setting small, realistic, and achievable goals for myself.

Ebuka; Digital Marketing Manager

There’s no perfect time to make better life choices. But the idea behind New Year resolutions is fantastic. Dropping unproductive habits, staying consistent with beneficial routines, or starting new ones.

Dan; Baker

I am not a fan of making New Year resolutions. Rather, I am an advocate of making good of whatever life throws at you. Hence, every day I set out with the mindset “I must be better than I was yesterday”.

NB; Please keep in mind that these are the opinions of people from various occupations, not those of a life coach.

Whether you think a New Year resolution is a good idea or not, it’s very important to set goals in a New Year and plan how to attain them.

And, if you insist on making yearly resolutions, remember that it’s best to strive toward them rather than seeing them as a yearly ritual of unmet ambitions.

One way to do that is to think of your resolutions as goals, that way you will be liberated from the pressure of “keeping your resolutions,” allowing you to concentrate on achieving your goals.

This year, we are rooting for you to achieve all the life-changing goals you’ve set for yourself.
